Which wedding photography style is perfect for you?

We love to help you to choose your wedding style photography, but we can create a unique and artistic style for your wedding as well!

Weddings seem to have a language of their own and, though by the time you walk down the aisle, you’ll know your Bomboniere from your boutonnieres, the first terms you’ll need to get your head around are those relating to wedding themes. We'd love to match our artistic style with your wedding.

Which Wedding Photography style is best?

There isn't one Wedding Photography Style that's right for everyone, it's totally a personal preference decision. At the end of the whole debate is the most important person, YOU -  THE BRIDE, you ultimately deserve to get what you want from your wedding photography experience. That is why we say 'Your day ...Your way!'

A typical photo shoot with pre-planned ideas and lots of direction or 'magazine style' posed images. That doesn’t mean that the photographs will appear forced or posed, but that there will likely be few spontaneous “action shots” included in the mix. We look to capture perfect moments with artistry and dignity and produce excellent, albeit formulaic, shots of the wedding party, families, and portraits of bride and groom.

Traditional (or say cheese!)

Fine art wedding photography starts with the photographer’s artistic vision.  Today, a modern fine art approach is what is most commonly taken in which wedding images are shot with a specific narrative in mind, with careful attention paid to lighting, background, and composition.  This approach is different from photojournalism in that a photojournalists priority is to objectively depict an event without artistic enhancements.   Now, the most important question is, “why should you consider a fine art wedding photographer”?   The short answer is, if you are planning a wedding in which design, decor, and aesthetics are paramount, then a fine art wedding photographer is a good choice for you.

If you love the look of photography in magazines like Vogue, GQ, and Harper’s Bazaar, then you might like your wedding to be photographed with a similar feel. Editorial is another one of those styles that many photographers identify with, because it’s an art form in of itself. It allows photographers to shoot creatively and over the top. While you won’t find candid moments in this style of photography, everything about the editorial look is dramatic, edgy, and sexy.

This is not a photo shoot, it’s part of a timeline in the heritage of your family’s history. Documentary and reportage style wedding photography are more than simply snapshots from a day. It’s about having an instinct for what may happen, a grounded experience of the day itself.

"For me the concept of Transparency has a delicate and feminine touch. I strived for innocence and a genuine quality in the images to portray a light heartedness that comes with the conceptualization of translucent clarity. My approach was with a touch of glowing romance, minimalistic aesthetic, and thoughtful composition." -Sally Pinera

The dictionary defines Photojournalism as telling a story with photos. In wedding photography, today photojournalism has come to be known as documentary photos of wedding-day events as they happened. (With no involvement, direction or control from the photographer). The photographer captures a moment as it happened without orchestrating it. Identified as being more raw, realistic and factual, stemming from newspaper photography.

Unadulterated photojournalism is often marked by the photographer having no influence nor any manipulation of the event but only documenting what was naturally occurring without any input (Cut to me saying: newspaper photographer on assignment)... Much more challenging than 'set-up & dress-up' play photography. Advantages: natural looking photographs, low stress, real memories of real moments instead of contrived ones, the photography happens around your event timetable rather than as an interruption of it.

Dramatic photos usually need dramatic lighting. When the sun is low, early in the morning and late in the afternoon, the possibilities for an epic shot are much greater.

Why? First, the color of the sky in the background will be much more colorful — ranging from dark blue and purples to reds and oranges if there are clouds or a haze in the sky. Second, the angle of the sun gives you a powerful and sharp backlight or sidelight, making for bright highlights, glowing hair light, and dark shadows. This adds some punch to the image. And third, the landscape has the most texture at this time, while trees and buildings have long and interesting shadows.

Dramatic  (showing the emotion and grandeur of a wedding day)

A relatively newer style in the landscape of wedding photography, a moody or VSCO-look means that your photographer edits their photos in such a way as to mimic film imagery (or they might be a hybrid shooter — shooting both film and digital). This editing style can lead to rich and dramatic images. If you’re looking for an artistic, interesting perspective of your wedding day, then this style might be your new obsession.
